Problem / need / context
In the UK’s vocational education, many learners experience difficulties with numeracy when it is taught separately from practical activities, which often leads to low confidence and limited ability to apply mathematical skills in real work situations. At the same time, modern workplaces increasingly require employees to work with data budgets, measurements, and digital systems, which makes applied numeracy and digital competence essential transversal skills. This creates a need for approaches that integrate numeracy into vocational practice using digital tools.
Intervention
VET providers introduced the use of spreadsheet tools such as Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets to embed numeracy into vocational subjects. Teachers designed scenario-based activities where learners worked with real data, such as calculating costs, planning budgets, and tracking time or productivity depending on their vocational field. These activities required learners to use formulas, interpret results, and make decisions based on data while using digital tools that are commonly found in workplaces.
Outcomes
Learners demonstrated improved confidence in numeracy as they were able to see the direct relevance of calculations to their vocational tasks. Their digital competence also improved, particularly in relation to handling data and using spreadsheet tools effectively. Teachers reported increased engagement and better understanding compared to traditional approaches to teaching numeracy. This case shows how integrating numeracy into digital task-based learning can strengthen both mathematical and digital skills and better prepare learners for real workplace demands.
