Leadership (Role-playing simulation)

You are facilitating a project-based module in a VET course on event planning and communication. A group of trainees is tasked with developing a one-day customer service workshop for local SMEs. The team is diverse: Thomas and Elena are confident and quick to dominate discussions. Maria is insightful and well-prepared but is often interrupted and hesitant to push back. Andrey has become visibly disengaged, frequently late and withdrawn. Your role is to lead this group by modelling inclusive, participatory leadership: ensuring all voices are heard, responsibilities are shared, and motivation is nurtured.

Lead the team by making key decisions that demonstrate inclusive leadership. Your actions should support shared ownership, resolve conflict respectfully, and build learner confidence.

Exercise 1: Multiple choice

Scenario (Maria’s frustration)
Maria says:
“I really wanted to suggest a group activity… but every time I speak, Thomas cuts me off. Maybe my ideas aren’t that useful.”

As a leader, how do you respond?
Choose one of the following options.

Exercise 2: Multiple choice

Scenario (Andrey’s disengagement)
You notice Andrey hasn’t contributed during the last two meetings. When approached, he says:
Andrey: “Honestly, I just don’t feel like I belong in this group. Thomas does everything his way and no one listens to me.”

How do you respond?
Choose one of the following options.
