What is Angle Table Top Game (Mentoring)?
Angle is a table-top game designed to develop financial education, a key tool for developing numeracy, critical thinking in everyday life, but also for transitions from study to work. Encouraging students to learn by playing is a typical way that a teacher can use in a mentoring perspective. Rather than “preaching” careful finance, students are faced with situations. Around the table, they will, among other features, face multiple-choice cards. The right answer is written on the back of the card with a short explanation. When piloting the tool, the students concluded: the contents are excellent and, most of all, this is the way to learn!
How does this tool relate to Tailored guidance and mentoring?
Guidance through mentoring implies finding tools that will get students involved and, at the same time, provide a high educational content: involvement and high standards represent a combination difficult to find because “fun” tools are all too often of limited content, whereas high-level academic tools can be boring!
+ Strengths
- Very effective in involving players thanks to the game design, contents developed over three years of an Erasmus+ project, with the contribution of four universities, impact measured in VET schools, both in terms of improvements in literacy, numeracy, and understanding simple challenges.
- Considerations
- You need to play for at least one hour, with four or more players per table, and this may be too demanding given heavy curricular requirements: maybe the game should be “sliced” in class time?
- The game is “open source” as all Erasmus projects, but downloading and printing can be cumbersome.
- The project was completed in August 2023 and was awarded “best practice” status, but some cards, like the ones on cryptocurrencies or the ones based on current statistical information, would need to be updated.
