Adapting Under Pressure: A Construction Training Scenario in County Leitrim

Problem / need / context

At a Further Education and Training centre in County Leitrim, Ireland, trainers delivering a construction skills programme began noticing a recurring challenge among learners. The group included young apprentices, early school leavers returning to education, and adults retraining after redundancy. While most learners demonstrated strong practical ability, many struggled when situations did not unfold as expected.

During work placements with local building contractors, several learners reported feeling overwhelmed when plans changed unexpectedly. Situations such as missing materials, sudden weather changes, or alterations to client requests caused confusion and slowed down work. Some learners stopped working until instructions were given, while others became frustrated or disengaged.

Local employers also highlighted that adaptability is one of the most valued workplace behaviours in the construction sector. Builders regularly face changing site conditions, delayed deliveries, or last-minute design adjustments. Workers need to remain calm, communicate clearly, and adjust their plans quickly.

These observations highlighted a need to strengthen the transversal skill Adaptability and Resilience, defined as the ability to respond constructively to change, manage pressure, and remain effective in dynamic vocational environments.

Trainers recognised that learners needed opportunities to practise responding to real-world disruption within a safe training environment before entering the workplace.

Intervention

To address this issue, one of the construction trainers introduced a practical workshop exercise designed to simulate the kind of disruption commonly experienced on Irish building sites.

Learners were organised into small teams and given a task to construct a section of a timber garden structure using a standard design plan. The activity initially followed a typical workshop format, allowing learners to begin measuring, cutting, and assembling the timber frame.

Partway through the exercise, the trainer introduced a deliberate disruption based on a real situation he had experienced while working on a local project. The “delivery” of timber was suddenly incomplete, leaving several key pieces missing. At the same time, the trainer informed learners that the client had requested a small change to the roof pitch. Rather than providing instructions on how to resolve the problem, the trainer asked each team to pause and reassess the situation.

Learners were encouraged to:

review the materials available

discuss possible design adjustments

redistribute tasks within the group

present their revised approach before continuing the build

This forced learners to think through the challenge collectively, rather than relying on the trainer to provide the answer.

Once the task was finished, the group gathered for a short reflection discussion. The trainer asked learners to talk about how they reacted when the situation changed, what strategies helped them adapt, and how similar challenges might arise on real construction sites.

Outcomes

The change in approach quickly produced noticeable improvements in learner behaviour.

Learners became more comfortable dealing with uncertainty during practical activities. Instead of stopping work when problems arose, teams began discussing options and testing solutions using the resources available.

The exercise also strengthened teamwork and communication. Learners recognised that adapting effectively depended on sharing ideas and coordinating tasks within the group.

Several participants later commented that the activity felt very similar to situations they encountered during their work placements. Having already experienced a disrupted task in the workshop helped them remain calmer and more confident when facing similar challenges on site.

For trainers, the experience highlighted the value of introducing controlled disruptions into practical training. By recreating realistic workplace conditions and supporting reflection afterwards, the training team was able to strengthen learners’ adaptability and resilience, preparing them more effectively for the unpredictable nature of construction work.
